Stratified Convection in the Sun
I work with Ben Brown, Mark Rast, and Axel Brandenburg to study fluid dynamics in stellar convection zones and atmospheres. I am trying to understand the discrepancy between low flow speeds found through recent helioseismic measurements and the much larger flow speeds mixing length theory predicts. Using the spectral PDE solving framework of the novel Dedalus code, we are working to create dynamical simulations of solar-like convection which can help explain the gap between observations and theory.
Recent Work
I study convection in the context of polytropically stratified atmospheres. These atmospheres can be easily adjusted to analyze the rarely studied low Mach number regime as well as the highly driven, low-diffusivity regime of high Rayleigh numbers. I am studying the structure of boundary layers in these regimes to determine their effects on convective structures.
